Saafir, Oakland Rapper And ‘Menace II Society’ Actor, Dead At Age 54

Saafir, a respected West Coast Hip-Hop artist and actor who appeared in the 1993 film Menace II Society, has passed away at the age of 54.

News of Saafir’s death first surfaced on Tuesday (Nov. 19), as rap artist Xzibit, a close friend and collaborator, announced the Oakland-born emcee’s passing in a heartfelt social media post. “I can’t believe I’m writing this right now, but don’t know what else to do at the moment,” Xzibit expressed in the caption of a post accompanied by a headshot photo of the late rapper, born Reggie Gibson.

“Approximately at 8:45am this morning, my brother Reggie known to the world as Saafir passed away. We have so much history I can’t even explain what I’m feeling right now. We surrounded him and let him know how much we loved him. He can rest now.” Gibson’s cause of death is unknown at this time.

The former Pimp My Ride host continued, asking Saafir’s fans and supporters to extend their well-wishes and condolences to the rhymer’s surving family members.

“Friends, Family, everyone that rocked with us from the Hip Hop community, if you could be so solid and reach out for @chopblack his younger brother, and @lilsaafir his son, the family really needs to be supported during this time,” Xzibit added. “That’s all I have right now. My soul is crushed. We love you Bro.”

Beginning his career with several contributions to Digital Underground’s 1993 album The Body-Hat Syndrome, Saafir quickly became a respected figure in Hip-Hop. A member of both the Hobo Junction and Golden State Project, his solo career took off with the release of his debut album Boxcar Sessions in 1994, followed by Trigonometry under the alias Mr. No No in 1998.

Saafir returned to his original name for his third album, The Hit List, and continued to release music, including Good Game: The Transition (2006) and Fast Lane EP (2009).

Beyond music, Saafir also made a mark in the film industry, showcasing his talents in acting. He famously appeared as Harold Lawson in the classic 1993 film Menace II Society, with his character being referenced in multiple songs by artists including Meek Mill, Fabolous, Gucci Mane, and others.

Fans and peers alike mourn the loss of a true West Coast luminary, whose influence extended far beyond the mic. Saafir’s legacy as a visionary artist will be remembered in both the Hip-Hop and film communities.
