Redman, Method Man, and Raekwon reunite to prove their freestyle skills never wavered.
Taking on Red Bull Spiral, a freestyle challenge where three to four rappers flex off-the-dome bars in one camera take, the veterans display not only rhyme skills but an undeniable chemistry as they perform their respective verses.
Wrangled in by Method Man, the 53-year-old opens the cypher, setting the tone for the three-minute rap session. He is followed up by Redman, who sends clear messages to the new generation of Hip-Hop.
“New rappers they hero Lil Wayne/ But my hero Billy Danze and Lil Fame,” rhymes the 54-year-old followed by, “The rap industry I don’t understand ‘em/ East coast radio sounds like Atlanta.”
Raekwon ties it all together with the closing verse declaring, “Ya crew love us, the Wu brothers/together the Doobie Brothers.”
While filming the cypher at Red Bull’s Santa Monica, CA studios, Redman and Method Man detailed one another’s best traits and how they impact their output.
“Doc is a true Aries, period!” Method Man describes of his frequent collaborator. “I think his best quality is how meticulous he is about his art form. He’s a creative’s creative.”
Redman adds of the Wu-Tang Clan member, “Besides him being a great dad, a good family man, a good friend and little brother to me, he’s great at motivating people. He takes his star-ism, if you will, very serious … another thing I like about him is he’s a straight shooter. If he doesn’t like something, he just says it.”
Red Bull Spiral is one element of Red Bull’s 1520 YouTube channel dedicated to Hip-Hop programming from the world of Red Bull, featuring beats, bars, and live performances from rap’s next movement.
Past participants in the cypher include Dreamville acts Earthgang, Cozz, and Lute, Griselda reps Armani Caesar, Rome Streetz and Jay Worthy, and Souls of Mischief refreshing their “93 ‘Til Infinity” beat with new rhymes.
