LeBron James is known for his unintentionally hilarious or polarizing tweets, but the Los Angeles Lakers superstar is looking to take a break from social media. Fans reacted to his announcement in a myriad of ways.
LBJ shared a screenshot of Rich Kleiman, Kevin Durant’s agent, discussing the recent nature of the media on X Wednesday. “With so much hate and negativity in the world today, it confuses me why some of National sports media still think that the best way to cover sports is through negative takes,” Kleiman wrote.
“We can all acknowledge that sports is the last part of society that universally brings people together. So why can’t the coverage do the same? It’s only click bait when you say it. When the platform is so big, you can make the change and allow us all an escape from real life negativity. I for one find it all a waste of breath. The Olympics and JJ and Bron’s show was the future of what this can and should all be.” Bron co-signed the tweet, writing “Amen” in all caps.
LeBron James followed up with another tweet, writing, “And with that said I’ll holla at y’all! Getting off social media for the time being. Y’all take care.”
This followed Ryan Clark accusing the Lakers of coddling LeBron’s son, Bronny James, as he won’t be required to travel while on G League team The South Bay Lakers due to the squad flying commercial. Many believe this criticism is what sparked James’ exit from social media.
Several fans had visceral reactions to his announcement, even going as far as to invoke Diddy who is currently in jail for racketeering conspiracy and sex trafficking. “Did Diddy snitch on ya or something?” one fan asked. “Ain’t no party like a Diddy party, right LeBron? Tick tock. You can’t run forever!” another user wrote. “X isn’t an airport. Departure announcements aren’t necessary. Just GTFO, LeBooty. Enjoy conjugal visits with ya boo thang, Diddy” one final user said.
Other respondents mentioned that he is one of the most divisive figures in sports and has caused a divide through his political stances. “Bro… You called Trump and his supporters (more than half the country), segregationist racists, KKK members and Nazis when you endorsed Kamala Harris,” one user wrote. “You are perpetuating the divisiveness and hate that is tearing this country apart. Maybe look at yourself in the mirror, before shaming others for ‘negativity’, hate and divisiveness…”
Despite the negativity weighing on him, LeBron James and the Los Angeles Lakers are off to a stellar start in the 2024-2025 NBA regular season. They currently have a 10-4 record and are the third seed in the Western Conference. The Lakers are also undefeated in their group for the in-season tournament which is now named the NBA Cup.
