Kevin Durant Sticks By Drake Despite UMG Petitions And Public Backlash

It has felt like the entire world has been against Drake for the last few months, and now he has the music industry to contend with following his two petitions against Universal Music Group. However, he got some public support from his longtime friend, NBA star Kevin Durant.

The Phoenix Suns forward posted a screenshot of him playing the 6 God’s 2015 track “30 For 30 Freestyle,” the outro of his collaborative album with Future, What A Time To Be Alive, on his Instagram story this week. Choosing this particular song was seemingly intentional, as the Toronto superstar alluded to him fighting a bigger fight than just his beef with Meek Mill from summer 2015.

“Never thought I’d be talkin’ from this perspective/ But I’m not really sure what else you expected/ When the higher-ups have all come together as a collective/ With conspiracies to end my run and send me a message/ 40, did you get the message?/ ‘Cause I just checked my phone and I didn’t get it/ I mean, I’ll say hats off for a solid effort/ But we didn’t flinch for a second, we got our sh*t together,” he rapped. Listen to “30 For 30 Freestyle” below.

Kevin Durant supporting Drake should not be a shock. Drizzy has name-dropped him in several records, specifically “Pop That,” “Weston Road Flows,” “Gold Roses,” and more. KD also A&R’d his October 2023 LP, For All The Dogs.

Most recently, the five-time Grammy winner mentioned the two-time NBA MVP on “No Face” when he said “KD just text ‘What the f**’ are we waiting on?’” At the time, that line was seemingly just about him dropping music and possibly reigniting the beef with Kendrick Lamar and his other opponents from earlier this year. However, with these new petitions against Universal Music Group, it is possible that Durant was encouraging him to try and take down his label sooner than when he filed the petitions.

The “Rich Baby Daddy” artist opened the week by sending UMG a pre-action petition for allegedly artificially inflating the popularity of K. Dot’s “Not Like Us” by using bots and payola to manipulate streaming platforms. He followed up the next day by sending a petition for defamation due to UMG knowingly supporting “Not Like Us” and its accompanying music video, despite the fact it falsely accused him, their signee, of being a pedophile.
