Central Cee got a taste of the fickle nature of stardom over this last week. The 26-year-old rapper recently claimed that he influenced a fashion trend in the United States, and received polarizing reactions as a result.
“I’m humble innit, but at the same time I like to think that man put a lot of man on to the Nike Tech thing,” the London rapper said in a recent video. “You see the influence like even in America people be rocking the Techs like they’re us.” This clip made its rounds on the internet and fans were quick to recall the history of Nike Techs in the United States.
“Nah i remember this was Brooklyn scammer uniform at one point like from 2013,” one fan wrote on X with a picture of a grey Nike Tech sweatsuit. “Lmaoo somebody gotta give central cee a history lesson.” Another user quoted the tweet and added, “I wasn’t scamming, but this is 2015. I was 22” with his own photo wearing a grey Nike Tech sweatsuit.
Other fans found photos of Central Cee from years past — when Nike Tech was popular in New York — and cited how he had his hair in a bun and was dressing differently. Popular media personality and music executive Wayno quoted Taxstone, who rapped “Nike Tech and a bottle of Henny is a winter coat.” He claimed that the UK drill rapper was likely seven years old when those bars were spat.
It wasn’t all negativity directed at Cee, though. One user posted screenshots of a conversation with a Nike executive who claimed the “mandem” introduced Nike Tech suits to fashion and influenced everyone else to wear them. Given the fact there are no rules with fashion nor a confirmed timeline documenting where and when Nike Techs began to gain popularity, this conversation will likely go in circles with no real conclusion.
If Cench abides by the notion that “all publicity is good publicity,” then this “controversy” lines up perfectly for him, as he just recently released his debut album Can’t Rush Greatness. The 17-song effort features Lil Baby, 21 Savage, Lil Durk, Dave, Skepta, and Young Miko. Listen below.
