Michelle Obama just gave reality TV fans a surprising revelation during a recent episode of her IMO podcast, co-hosted by her brother Craig Robinson.
While chatting with guest Taraji P. Henson, the conversation shifted when the former First Lady revealed she’s a devoted viewer of the hit VH1 show Love & Hip-Hop, and has admiration for the show’s beloved matriarch “Momma Dee.” Henson, too, admitted that she watches “a little bit of all of them” but singled out the show as her top choice.
Michelle lit up while declaring Lil Scrappy’s mother her favorite. The Color Purple actress couldn’t hold back her laughter as she added, “Because I know everybody knows a Momma Dee if you don’t have one in your family,” Taraji said before Michelle quipped, “Then you lying. You’re just not recognizing Momma Dee.”
It turns out, reality TV is a guilty pleasure for Michelle to unwind and help her relax after a long day. “I told my husband, I was like, ‘You watch golf, I watch unscripted,’” she shared. “It brings me, I don’t know, it just settles me down.” Taraji nodded in agreement, referencing how “the Blackness in us” lives for the “call and response” moments in reality TV — particularly yelling at the screen during those dramatic and wild scenes.
The buzz surrounding Michelle and Taraji’s praise of Momma Dee didn’t go unnoticed by the reality queen herself, who swiftly reposted the clip on Instagram to express her heartfelt gratitude. “For me and my son @reallilscrappy to be recognized by two incredible women is unexplainable!” she wrote. “Thank you to the former First Lady of the United States @michelleobama & the amazing @tarajiphenson! Much love from the Palace to you!”
