Barack Obama and Donald Trump put their political differences aside for Jimmy Carter‘s funeral—and netizens have thoughts.
On Thursday (Jan. 9), funeral services for former President Carter were held at Washington National Cathedral in the nation’s capital. The funeral brought together five previous United States presidents in George W. Bush, Joe Biden, Bill Clinton, and of course, President-elect Trump and Obama. And, while all the previous first ladies were present, Michelle Obama was absent due to a scheduling conflict as she had been in Hawaii on an “extended vacation”, per CNN.
With Mrs. Obama’s absence, the seating chart was altered, causing Obama to sit directly next to the controversial Republican president. However, instead of writing another chapter in their heated political rivalry, the two men were actually seen laughing and chatting it up. The contents of their conversation are currently unknown, but that didn’t stop the internet from reacting to the viral videos and photos of the two men having regular interactions with rare smiles and pleasantries.
“Obama & Trump chatting it up like old buddies and some of y’all fools skipped holiday dinners with your families over political differences. Who’s the dummy now?” one account critiqued, referencing the brittle culture wars that have conquered American politics, per ABC.
“Y’all remember when Trump questioned the legitimacy of Obama’s birth certificate? For years? You’d never know it now,” another person typed on X/Twitter. “Don’t get your blood pressure up fighting for these politicians. They’re fine. Worry about yourself & your community.”
“Donald Trump talked all of that sh*t about Obama now he can’t stop smiling and giggling in his face thirsty a**,” a subsequent post declared, referencing Trump’s infamous birther and spy claims he attempted to pin on Obama in 2016.
“All Trump has ever wanted was for Obama to respect and acknowledge him,” an account opined. “Because it is not MAGATs whose respect he seeks, but those Trump considers elites. It is why Trump is so delighted here.”
And it’s not just the internet that peeped the interaction between Trump and Obama. A video of Kamala Harris has also gone viral, with Vice President Harris turning around to see the men laughing and seemingly turning around back in her seat, visibly reacting to the scene.
Trump and Obama’s political feud has dominated the shared history between them. But hey, if you let these photos and videos tell it, maybe Trump was right about Obama actually liking him all those years ago.
