Former President Barack Obama opened up about the reality of his and Michelle Obama‘s marriage. Earlier this month, the 61-year-old revealed how his two terms in the White House impacted their relationship.
“I was in a deep deficit with my wife,” he elaborated to Hamilton College President Steven, per The Daily Beast. “So I have been trying to dig myself out of that hole by doing occasionally fun things.”
According to the outlet, the revelation comes as the Obamas face rumors of divorce after Mr. Obama attended President Jimmy Carter’s funeral and Donald Trump’s inauguration without his wife. Friends star Jennifer Aniston even had to debunk gossip that she and Obama had an affair on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, calling it “absolutely untrue,” The New Yorker reported.

Michelle and Barack are not new to fighting rumors regarding their personal lives. Last month, Michelle spoke about how they handle the spotlight that comes what both praise and skeptics.
“People always ask me and Barack, how did we stay hopeful in, not just the eight years that we were in the White House, but beyond,” detailed 61-year-old last month during the 2025 SXSW on Thursday at a live taping of she and her brother’s new podcast, IMO with Michelle Obama and Craig Robinson, per PEOPLE Magazine.
“Because, let me tell you, there was a lot of negative energy flipping our way — a lot of rumors, a lot of gossip, a lot of, you know, my husband wasn’t born in this country … we weren’t patriotic, he didn’t get into Harvard.”
She continued to explain, “Don’t let that negative energy enter into your space. These are people who don’t know you. A lot of this stuff is made up, and it does not feed you,” adding, “That doesn’t mean you don’t stay informed, but staying informed has nothing to do with the comment section. It has everything to do with the content of the stories that you take in.”
