Doechii has the perfect response to audiences who label her an industry plant. Speaking with The Cut as the publication’s February 2025 cover star, the Florida native discussed the “conspiracies” surrounding her career ascension.
“When people aren’t familiar with the history of an artist these days, they get suspicious,” explained the 26-year-old. “I’m pretty detached emotionally from it because I understand where it’s coming from. And to be honest, once you get any conspiracies around your career, that’s just confirmation that I’m going somewhere, and I’m doing something right.”
While 2024 exists as Doechii’s mainstream breakout year with the release of the mixtape Alligator Bites Never Heal resulting in her historic 2025 Grammy win for Best Rap Album, she has worked toward this moment for years. In fact, she released multiple mixtapes and EPs before signing with her current label Top Dawg Entertainment in 2022.
“I woke up one day and told my label, ‘I’m just going to make a mixtape,’” detailed Doechii of the project., “I was able to birth this out of pure presence and creativity, and I think I want to carry that with all of my projects and have that mentality moving forward.”
Bringing her music to life on the Grammy stage also resulted in unsolicited critique and rumors about her artistry from fans. This time, the “Alter Ego” rhymer took to TikTok to address the allegations that she lip-synced the live show where she performed “Denial Is a River” and “Catfish” from the aforementioned acclaimed mixtape.
“I can’t possibly get on here and say calmly or nicely,” she began in a speaking tone before raising her voice to declare “y’all are stupid as hell — so slow!” Check out the MC defending her performance below.
