Celebrities grace courtside seats at NBA games all the time, typically enjoying the action from a safe distance and appearing on the jumbotron occasionally. But at Madison Square Garden on Tuesday night (March 4), Jennifer Hudson and Common found themselves in the thick of the game.
The couple became unexpected participants during the Knicks and Warriors game in NYC, where Common found himself attempting to block a basketball from hitting J Hud in the face. During the second quarter, Knicks guard Miles “Deuce” McBride charged out of bounds in pursuit of the ball landing on Hudson.
In a failed attempt to shield his lady, the prolific wordsmith instinctively raised his hand to protect her — only to accidentally strike Hudson himself just moments before McBride fell into her. Referees rushed over to make sure she was okay as she took off her glasses that appeared to be missing a lens, and wiped her eyes. Watch the footage below.
The pair confirmed their romance back in January on The Jennifer Hudson Show following looming rumors of dating.
Without naming anyone, Common shared at the time, “I’m in a relationship that is with one of the most beautiful people I’ve met in life. She’s smart. She loves God. She has something real down-to-earth about her. She’s talented, but I set my standard kind of high because she had to have a EGOT. She had to win an Oscar on her first movie… she had to get her own talk show.”
He added, “This relationship is a happy place for me. It’s like for me, it’s one of those things where I found where seeing her happy actually makes me really happy. I’m very grateful. I thank God each and every day.”
