Hulu has officially ordered a pilot for Group Chat, a satirical comedy to be led by La La Anthony (BMF), who also serves as an executive producer, Deadline reports. The project is written and executive produced by Black-ish creator Kenya Barris. Co-Star Kim Kardashian is also on board as an executive producer.
Loosely based on Anthony’s bestselling book, The Love Playbook: Rules for Love, Sex, and Happiness, the film aims to bring it to life though the eyes of its characters.
In her book, Anthony offers a personal service guide to cultivating healthy relationships and living a fulfilling life. Through candid reflections, she shares insights into her former marriage to retired NBA star Carmelo Anthony based on their past experiences. The actress also provides practical advice on everything from fostering mutual respect in relationships and navigating friendships, to the keys to attracting a high-profile partner.
According to Hulu’s official synopsis, Group Chat will explore some of these themes while centering on “five fly, successful women in their forties who have conquered L.A. and seemingly have it all. But behind their picture-perfect lives is a secret group chat where the real drama unfolds.”

The chemistry between the cast is expected to feel effortlessly authentic, as Kardashian and Anthony share a long-standing real-life friendship. La La has made many appearances on Keeping Up With the Kardashians as Kim has supported her and her family nonstop. Their natural dynamic, also shaped by years in the spotlight together, is sure to add depth to the series.
The friends bring serious on-screen experience to the table. Anthony, known for her role in Starz’s Power, currently has recurring roles in BMF and The Chi. Kardashian, meanwhile, has starred in Tyler Perry’s Temptation and American Horror Story: Delicate. Group Chat marks the first project under the billionaire’s first-look deal with 20th Television.
“I’m incredibly interested in telling stories that are personal, complicated, and relevant—ones drawn from my own experiences and those familiar to me,” Kardashian said in a statement, per Deadline. “I had a front-row seat to working with the exceptional team at 20th Television during American Horror Story: Delicate, and I’m so excited to dive into developing my first wave of television projects with the team led by Karey Burke and Eric Schrier, and to continue working alongside Craig Erwich and his entire group at Hulu and Disney.”
Beyond Group Chat, Barris too continues to expand his television empire. He executive produces BET+’s critically acclaimed Diarra From Detroit, created by and starring Diarra Kilpatrick, along with Black-ish, The Vince Staples Show on Netflix, and the Netflix film You People.
As of now, Hulu has not announced a release date or full cast list for Group Chat.
