Lauryn Hill headlined the first night of Jazz In The Gardens 2025 on Saturday (March 8). During her live rendition of her 1998 classic, “Doo Wop (That Thing),” the formidable artist brought out Doechii to perform with her.
The “DENIAL IS A RIVER” star was already on the bill, but it was a surprise for the audience to have Hill pass the proverbial baton to the newly minted Grammy winner—especially with the Miseducation legend being the first Black woman to win Best Rap Album at the Grammys and Doechii being the latest.
“Thank you Miss Lauryn Hill. Thank you. My heart is so full. She is my hero,” Doechii tweeted after the set. “This is the greatest honor Hip-Hop could give me. Praise God [brown heart emoji] My entire body is vibrating with joy right now. I’ll never forget this day! EVER!”
In a separate tweet, the self-proclaimed Swamp Princess further detailed how she felt about performing with Hill. “I never been so nervous in my life,” Doechii tweeted. “She is a QUEEN.”
DJ Miss Milan later dubbed Doechii a “legend” in her own regard following the performance.
“You are a legend sis! @officialdoechii Lauryn Hill gave you flowers and passed the torch tonight! You should be so proud! I love you!,” she wrote.
Before performing her own hits including “NISSAN ALTIMA,” Doechii called Hill “the greatest artist of all time.” She then continued her set with Hill on stage. The latter closed out the show with Wyclef Jean and her son, YG Marley.
Other Jazz In The Gardens 2025 highlights included Beenie Man bringing out Mýa to perform their timeless jam, “Girls Dem Sugar,” and Toni Braxton revealing that “most of the crew that was supposed to be with her at [the festival] were in the tragic accident with Angie Stone.”
So, she surprised attendees with her sister Trina Braxton and dedicated “Breathe Again” to the late singer, who once said that was her favorite song.
