Lil Wayne is making his own history as he prepares to perform his first-ever headlining show at the iconic Madison Square Garden in New York City. Set for Friday (June 6), the highly anticipated show coincides with the release of his next monumental album Tha Carter VI, giving fans an exclusive, live preview of the new music in one of the world’s most legendary venues.
The huge announcement comes after the native son was ruled out as New Orleans’s 2025 Super Bowl halftime show performer — a spot ultimately filled by Kendrick Lamar. Speaking about not performing on probably the biggest platform in entertainment, Weezy recently told Rolling Stone, “Imagine you’re a player-coach still averaging 30 a night and a ni**ga asking, ‘Hey, do you feel slighted that they don’t put you in the coach-type of conversations?’ No. I’m still dropping 30 [points] a night. I’m fine being the best rapper I, and then you just found out, ‘Oh sh*t, he owns [Young Money]? Oh, he put Drake out? Oh, my God.’ ”
Being “robbed” of the Super Bowl performance was a personal slight to the veteran artist as he felt no one was “more deserving” of honor than him. Back in November 2024, he shared his emotional response to not being selected. “I said to myself, ‘I want to be onstage for the Super Bowl one day, in front of my mom.’ And I worked my a** off to get that f**kin’ position. It was ripped away from me.”
Many of Weezy’s music peers felt his sentiments and spoke out in support of him. Global superstar (and his protégé) Nicki Minaj, was perhaps the most vocal in her disdain towards Jay-Z, who serves as the executive producer of the Half Time shows. At the time Minaj took to X where she called out Hov for “Denying a young black man what he rightfully put into this game for no other reason but your ego.”
Mentioning her YMCMB crew she continued, “Your hatred for BIRDMAN, Drake & Nicki got you punishing Lil Wayne?!?!!! LIL WAYNE!!!!!!!!!! THE GOAT?!!!!!!!!!!! Nola what’s good?!!!!!! Eminem stood firm on having 50Cent come out. A white man. Sh*t sad. House NI**ER TINGZ. but it’s GOOD FI DEM!!!!!!! No loyalty? Welp. then ni**az will keep son’ing you!!!!! #DTLR #GagCityDC LMFAOOOOOOOOOO GOODAZ FI DEL GAL U AH GOODAZ FI DEM.”
Although the YMCMB boss has pushed a Super Bowl performance out of his trajectory, fans can still witness him dominate one of the most important stages in the world this Summer. Presale ticket for his MSG show will be available starting Wednesday (April 23), with general sales releasing on Friday (April 25), at 10AM on LiveNation’s official website.
