Another chapter has been added to the “20 v. 1” that Drake experienced with Kendrick Lamar, Metro Boomin, Future, and more. The St. Louis producer recently revealed his change of heart regarding his online disses sent at the Toronto superstar.
GQ interviewed Metro and Hendrix as part of their Men Of The Year issue and, of course, the major beef this year came up. Boomin first shot down the idea that they concocted an evil plan to take down the 38-year-old rapper. “People really think we sat for two years, making two albums [to be] like ‘Yo, f**k this dude,’” he said. “What kind of sh*t is that? You really think we are going to spend that much time, effort, resources on just trying to get at somebody on an album? Blowing budgets on two albums–going over budget? That’s some serious hate. Neither one of us rock like that.”
Whether they had a full-blown plot or not, it was clear that there was a major issue between the previous collaborators and Metro admitted that. “Me and Drake, we had a personal issue and, for the record, not over no girl or anything silly like that,” he stated. “It was a personal issue that really hurt me and disappointed me.”
Metro Boomin, in a surprising turn of events, revealed that he regretted how he handled their personal issue. “Now I did have my moment online, which I do regret,” he said. “I should have been stronger than that. That was out of character for me. But at a certain point, it’s like, ‘I don’t rap, bro, so you’re going to just sh*t on me on all of these songs…I’m not going to get in the booth, so I’m finna tweet at you.’”
Drake and Metro exchanged subliminal tweets and Instagram stories for almost a year before the disses hit wax. They kicked off with the March album We Don’t Trust You, which included the incendiary “Like That” featuring Kendrick Lamar and a slew of other tracks with jabs seemingly aimed at the For All The Dogs rapper. They followed up with We Still Don’t Trust You a few weeks later, where The Weeknd and A$AP Rocky took shots at the former Degrassi actor, as well.
Drake replied to all of his opponents on “Push Ups” and “Family Matters,” claiming that Metro was the evil mastermind behind everyone attacking him at once. Metro went on to start a viral beat challenge using the “BBL Drizzy” beat, which also took on a life of its own.
