Diddy and Jermaine Dupri had one of the most anticipated Verzuz battles, but it seems like that won’t happen anytime soon, given the controversial mogul currently being behind bars and his forthcoming trial. Still, Nelly emphatically picked his winner for the hypothetical matchup during his recent appearance on Drink Champs.
“[Jermaine Dupri] and Puff was going to do a Verzuz, and Puff was gon’ get murdered. Easy! Easy!” he said. “Was not gonna be close. Puff is smart. He didn’t want no part. He knew that. Why you think he wanted to hold Verzuz in New York? JD could hold Verzuz anywhere. Puff only wanted to hold Verzuz in New York.”
The St. Louis rapper went on to run down everyone who JD has worked with, which makes him a tough competitor. “You do realize when you’re talking about JD, you’re talking about going all the way back to Kris Kross, Da Brat,” he added. “You could lock JD in a room by himself, he will come out with the song. He can perform it, he can make the beat and he can write it. Smash.” Watch below.
Talks of the battle first began in 2022. “JD, if you want that smoke, you can get that smoke anytime,” Diddy said in an Instagram Live. Jermaine Dupri replied by telling the Bad Boy co-founder to “relax” and saying he was willing to set up the event in Atlanta. However, with Verzuz dealing with business issues on the backend, Puff suggested changing the nature of the event to be more of a celebration.
“Since we ain’t f**king with Verzuz no more ’cause they f**king around with our boys, we don’t need to be going against each other,” he said at the time. “Let’s come together and do that. Bad Boy, So So Def in Atlanta. It ain’t no Verzuz, it’s just hit for hit.”
Busta Rhymes even shared that they officially picked the date for the event, set to take place on Sept. 8, 2023, at Madison Square Garden. Unfortunately, it never happened. Now, it seems like it will only be a topic of hypothetical conversation and fantasy.
