BREAKING,

Pope waves to the crowd from balcony before his release from Rome hospital.

Pope Francis has made his first public appearance since being hospitalised five weeks ago, waving to a crowd from a balcony before his discharge.

The 88-year-old was admitted to Gemelli University Hospital in Italy’s capital, Rome, on February 14 with a severe respiratory infection that has required evolving treatment.

On Saturday, one of the doctors treating him said the head of the Roman Catholic Church would be discharged from hospital on Sunday and would need two months of rest at the Vatican.

This is a developing story.
