Reginae Carter has come to her father, Lil Wayne’s, defense following criticism of his SNL 50 performance.

After Wayne took the stage with The Roots to perform a medley of his hit songs—including “Uproar,” “6 Foot 7 Foot,” “Lollipop,” “Mrs. Officer” and “A Milli”—some online critics suggested his set was an example of why he was not selected to perform at this year’s Super Bowl halftime show.

In response, Carter addressed the backlash in The Shade Room’s Instagram comment section, firmly defending her father’s performance while also pointing out that Super Bowl performers do not get paid for their appearances. “Y’all are some d riders!” she wrote. “My dad been having fun performing for years! He is truly himself when he hit the stage. Go play with y’all mf kids .. he collected a check after this .. what y’all get for hating? Not a damn thing!”

Social media had much to say about his set, with many doubling down on Wayne staying far from a Super Bowl stage.

“This SNL performance proves that Lil Wayne shouldn’t ever do a Super Bowl,” one person wrote as another said, “I love Lil Wayne with my whole damn heart but the SNL performance is making those who said he should have played the Super Bowl look even dumber.”

A third person reposted his performance with the caption, “here’s the halftime performance ya’ll wanted.”

Wayne’s absence from the Super Bowl halftime show was a point of discussion for many, particularly because the game was held in his hometown of New Orleans.

The goated rapper previously shared in an Instagram video that being passed over for the performance “hurt a whole lot,” but maintained a positive attitude. Weezy also revealed that he spoke to Kendrick Lamar—this year’s performer—and “wished him all the best and told him he better kill it” during this year’s NFL showdown.

He added, “I think [Lamar’s] a fan like I’m a fan of his music … he saw what everybody else [saw] and he saw how much it meant to me. I think that’s all he mean… obviously he can’t control that. He didn’t let me down. It ain’t like he can control it…I think he means he made it there, his hard work is the reason he made it there and obviously let me down is me being upset and disappointed about not getting that spot.”

Earlier this month, Wayne announced that Tha Carter VI will be released on June 6, marking the latest installment in his long-running and highly successful album series.
