President Donald Trump has a lot of support within the government, but it is not unanimous. Representative Al Green of Texas was removed from the chambers after protesting during the controversial president’s joint address to Congress.
The 78-year-old politician was busy waxing poetic about the victories for the Republican party over the last few months while a large portion of the crowd cheered, applauded, and chanted “USA!” However, on the other side of the chambers, Green stood up and did not look amused. At one point, Trump could be seen pointing at him and directing someone to escort him out, but it did not happen immediately.
Green continued to protest, even pointing his cane toward Trump and yelling at him about how he had no mandate to cut Medicaid, according to Yahoo. An official seated behind Trump on the podium stood up, gave Green a warning, and told him to take his seat to maintain decorum. Green did not budge, and the House Sergeant At Arms eventually approached him and told him to leave. The crowd cheered in applause while Green was removed, as it allowed them to continue reveling in their success with no interruptions. Watch below.
Representative Al Green, a Democrat, has served in Congress since 2005 and has been active in trying to get Donald Trump impeached since his first term in 2017. This past January, he reiterated his intentions to work on getting Trump removed from office.
“The movement to impeach the president has begun. I rise to announce that I will bring Articles of Impeachment against the president for dastardly deeds proposed and dastardly deeds done,” he said. “Ethnic cleansing in Gaza is not a joke, especially when it emanates from the president of the United States, the most powerful person in the world.”
After being removed from the chambers, Green spoke to the media. “I have people that are very fearful, these are poor people, and they have only Medicaid in their lives when it comes to their healthcare,” he said. “And I want him to know that his budget calls for deep cuts in Medicaid. He needs to save Medicaid. Protect it. We need to raise the cap on social security; there’s a possibility that that’s going to be hurt, and we’ve got to protect Medicare. These are the safety net programs that people in my district depend on.”
Representative Al Green may be censured for his conduct during President Donald Trump’s speech, and he responded by saying that he is willing to accept the punishment. Fortunately for Green, he was not alone in his feelings during Trump’s speech as multiple other Democrats walked out.
