In a blistering critique of President Donald Trump’s recent speech about obtaining control over Greenland, Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-Texas) has called him “really psychotic.”
“I don’t even know why we’re fighting with Greenland,” Crockett said in a conversation with Adam Mockler of MeidasTouch Network following Trump’s remarks on Tuesday (March 4).
“Why are we fighting with Greenland? We’re fighting with Canada, we’re fighting with Mexico, yet we’re in love with Putin?” Crockett rhetorically asked. “What is happening? Like, this is not America. This is a terrible nightmare. Somebody slap me and wake me the f**k up because I’m ready to get on with it.”
Trump first brought up the idea of acquiring Greenland during his initial term, reigniting the controversy after his return to the White House. While he initially supported Greenland’s right to “determine its own future,” his stance quickly took a turn.
“We need [Greenland] really for international world security, and I think we’re going to get it,” Trump declared during his speech. “One way or the other, we’re going to get it.”
The campaign for the Denmark territory has drawn pushback from Danish and Greenlandic officials, who have repeatedly dismissed the notion of United States’ acquisition. Denmark’s Prime Minister, Mette Frederiksen, has been vocal with Trump that Greenland “is not for sale,” while Danish politician Anders Vistisen responded to Trump in the bluntest terms possible, telling him to “f**k off.”
Greenland’s Prime Minister, Múte Egede, took a more diplomatic approach but remained firm in his stance. “I think in the future, we have a lot to offer to cooperate with but we want to also be clear,” he explained to Fox News earlier this year. “We don’t want to be Americans, we don’t want to be a part of U.S. but we want a strong cooperation together with U.S.”
Despite international pushback, the Trump administration still appears determined to gain control. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated in January that the effort “is not a joke” and described Greenland as a “national interest” for the United States.
