SZA is ready to expand her acting range.
Her current dream role? Joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Storm to bring her origin story to life. The singer-songwriter made the announcement during her Friday (March 21) appearance on The Jennifer Hudson Show.”
“I would love to be a superhero,” SZA gushed to Hudson while “flying off into the sunset.” She reflected on growing up with her father’s first-edition comic book collection and “being into Marvel and DC,” but particularly being interested in playing Storm/Ororo Munroe.
“I think that would be so gnarly if I could be Storm’s origin story,” she shared. “That’d be so cool. I love to bring the range.”
Storm has previously been played by Halle Berry and Alexandra Shipp.
SZA made her acting debut in One Of Them Days, directed by Lawrence Lamont and written by Syreeta Singleton. The Friday-esque buddy comedy, which garnered nearly $51 million globally, also starred Keke Palmer.
Earlier in her episode from J. Hud’s show, she praised Palmer as both an actress and a person. “Keke is the most talented person I’ve ever met in real life,” SZA began. “I’m not kidding. You don’t understand. The vibrato in the singing voice, the comfortability in any space, the ability to make you comfortable in any space— like she can extend her aura mad wide […] It’s such like an enveloping, warm embrace of energy.”
The Grammy winner talked about Palmer’s “perspective on life,” describing it as “beautiful.” It caused SZA to question, “Sometimes I wonder if it’s too profound for her because it’s just so unique.” SZA concluded by calling Palmer “brilliant,” adding, “I can’t even stress how brilliant she really is. Like I would scream that from the mountaintops forever.”
One Of Them Days is currently available in select theaters and on demand.
