What could have been a simple birthday tribute quickly escalated into a public back-and-forth between Toni and Tamar Braxton on Instagram Monday night (March 17).
The Braxton exchange became a public spectacle when Tamar accused her older sister of “gaslighting” her on her birthday. As Toni attempted to wish Tamar a happy birthday, she found that she couldn’t repost a “gorgeous” picture of her younger sister because she had been allegedly blocked.
The “Unbreak My Heart” icon decided to make the matter public when she posted a galaxy of stars to her feed with the caption, “Wanted to repost that GORGEOUS picture of you. But I’m blocked, again?? Anyway, happy birthday Tay!” in response, Tamar fired back in the Shade Room’s comment section with, “Or you could have called. #Gaslighting.”

Tamar also shared a text message between them indicating that they are currently on good terms, calling Toni “mean” for implying they have some kind of issue.
The exchange immediately divided fans. Some criticized Tamar for blocking and Toni for making their personal issues public, as other others defended both sisters.
“She knew what she was doing by telling social media Tamar blocked her on Tamar’s birthday,” one Instagram user commented. “It was literally no reason we needed to know that but they still will blame Tamar. Attack your sister on her birthday on social media but she’s the problem.” Another argued that if Toni was unable to tag her sister, then she shouldn’t have called anyway. “If I’m blocked after we clearly got into it, why would I call?” they wrote. “So you can dismiss my call? Tamar is insufferable. Who beefs with Toni Braxton? Lmaooo.”
The timing of this sibling spat comes just a week after WE tv announced season two of The Braxtons. The Braxton family had taken a three-year hiatus from the small screen, following the death of their sibling, Traci, which was mentioned on The Braxton Family Values. Toni, Tamar, Tawanda, Trina, and Ms. Evelyn reunited on the network, offering an inside scoop on what they’ve been up to as a unit and individually.
The Braxtons lost their sister Traci to cancer in 2020, and in the first season of The Braxtons, they showed how they’ve navigated their grief and gone into new chapters.
“It is not overstating things to say this is one of the most significant developments in the history of WE tv and a moment the fans have been waiting for since the final episode of Braxton Family Values aired on December 17, 2020,” stated WE tv Head of Content, Brett Dismuke last year. “The Braxtons are one of the founding families of reality television and WE tv viewers were along for the ride through every moment of their original pioneering series, which spanned 148 unforgettable episodes.”
