A woman who recently took to the pulpit is believed to have plagiarized one of T.D. Jakes’ most iconic sermons, and his daughter has something to say.
Kristina Java first shared the clip of herself preaching in New York to her Instagram page in mid-December, where she initially received several encouraging remarks. Eventually, however, viewers began to recognize it as Jakes’ 2000 Woman Thou Art Loosed sermon, with Java reciting much of it line-for-line while implementing a whooping style of preaching that Jakes and other Black pastors are known for. Java’s exaggerated interpretation, however, lacks authenticity, with Jakes’ daughter, Rev. Cora Jakes, expressing her disappointment in Java for “mimicking” her father.
“I’m saddened by this, I do hope you [gave] my papa credit, he labored for what you mimicked. SMH,” Rev. Cora Jakes wrote on Java’s Instagram page in defense of her father’s legacy. Check out a post comparing the two sermons below.
Jakes’ daughter wasn’t the only one to express disappointment, with many questioning why Java would leave the post up after so much backlash.
“Ask God to show you your true voice. The fact that you still have this up lets me know that in some way you either crave or are enjoying the attention—-even if it’s negative. You clearly don’t know yourself and that’s ok, but you should not be leading anyone anywhere,” offered one commentor beneath her video, with another calling out one of her mentors by the name of Prophet Passion. “Prophet passion taught you how to plagiarize a whole TD Jake’ s sermon???? You can’t plagiarize the anointing though. Try again.”
Java has yet to directly address the accusations.
