Diddy may have received the best chance at beating his multiple charges this week. Brian Steel, the attorney who helped Young Thug come out on the winning end of his RICO trial, recently joined the Bad Boy co-founder’s defense team.

Meghann Cunniff, the go-to legal journalist for many Hip-Hop trials over the last few years, reported the power move on Tuesday (April 15). “Here’s something I didn’t expect to write,” she wrote on X (formerly Twitter). “Young Thug’s lawyer Brian Steel has joined Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs’ criminal defense team.” In a follow-up tweet, she quoted his motion, where he requested to appear as counsel for the 55-year-old artist in his trial next May.

“‘On June 10, 2024, I was held in contempt by a Superior Court Judge in Fulton County, Georgia in State of Georgia v. Jeffery Williams et al., Case Number 22SC 183 572 when the judge wrongfully ordered that I reveal privileged information.’” As recent history has shown, and per his motion, the misdemeanor contempt conviction was reversed via a unanimous decision by the Supreme Court of Georgia.

Brian Steel has a challenging trial ahead of him, as Diddy also faces racketeering charges, plus trafficking and more. The former REVOLT chairman has also been the subject of several sexual misconduct lawsuits from men and women, and they do not seem like they will stop being filed anytime soon. On top of that, his ex-girlfriend Cassie, whom he was seen assaulting on camera and kicked off the flurry of lawsuits, will be testifying against him without anonymity. Nonetheless, Steel’s presence should inspire some confidence as he was able to successfully get Thugger a probation sentence in a trial that, at one point, seemed all but certain to have him behind bars for several years.

Steel has been a name circulating in the Hip-Hop sphere for years, such as Thug shouting him on the 2018 record “Oh Okay” with Gunna and Lil Baby. Drake recently titled a song on his collaborative album with PARTYNEXTDOOR, $ome $exy $ongs 4 U, after the popular attorney; given his close friendship with Thugger, Steel being instrumental in him being freed was a celebratory matter.

“Shout Brian Steel, I’m too geeked for the guys/ Yeah, woah, I’ve been in the house, but I’m comin’ outside tonight,” the Toronto superstar rapped. In another line, he added, “Yeah, shout Brian Steel, take off the cuffs, we leavin’ now, ayy, what?” Upon learning about the song, Steel reciprocated the love. “I have had the honor and pleasure of meeting with Mr. Graham,” he told Joe Coscarelli from The New York Times. “He is so kind, considerate, generous, inspirational, intelligent — a true leader and great model for our community.”
