Zingah Weighs In On Whether The Qwellers Saved SA Hip Hop

When asked whether The Qwellers “lowkey saved SA hip hop,” Zingah responded with a measured but emphatic take. “They participated in the saving, yeah. I think between them and the Pretoria rappers, they did a lot of good work to bring it back. But as far as culturally, I think The Qwellers definitely, they did a lot.”

His statement highlights the impact that The Qwellers have had on the culture, not just through their music but also in how they embody the essence of hip-hop. The collective—known for their raw storytelling, authentic sound, and deep-rooted influence in the underground scene—has steadily gained recognition, proving that lyricism and artistry remain at the heart of SA hip hop.

Zingah’s mention of Pretoria rappers also nods to a wave of artists from the capital city who have played a crucial role in shaping the current landscape. From 25K and Thato Saul to A-Reece, Pretoria has emerged as a powerhouse, delivering street-centric narratives with a distinctly South African flavour.

The conversation reflects a broader sentiment within the hip-hop community—one that acknowledges a shift in momentum, with newer artists not only keeping the culture alive but actively elevating it.

As SA hip-hop continues to evolve, it’s clear that the contributions of The Qwellers and Pretoria’s finest have left an undeniable mark on the game. Whether or not they “saved” it entirely remains up for debate, but one thing is certain: they played a pivotal role in its revival.
